SOBRE LA OBRA

Transcurre entre dos épocas y espacios, y tiene como tema central la huella que las dictaduras, a menudo surgidas bajo la apariencia de revoluciones democráticas, imprimen en las sociedades y en los seres humanos. Analizamos, mediante las herramientas que nos ofrecen el teatro, el pensamiento y el arte, cómo los regímenes totalitarios desarrollan mecanismos de violencia, con frecuencia solapados y sutiles, que vulneran y ponen a prueba la integridad de las personas.

SOBRE EL AUTOR

Abel González Melo (La Habana,1980) es doctor en Estudios Literarios y máster en Teatro por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, así como licenciado en Teatrología por la Universidad de las Artes de Cuba (ISA). Cursó la Residencia Internacional del Royal Court Theatre de Londres en 2005, estudió en Panorama Sur de Buenos Aires y en el Maxim Gorki Theater de Berlín. Fue dramaturgo residente del Teatro HOME de Mánchester durante la temporada 2015-16, y desde 2018 lo es de Teatro Avante, compañía que ha estrenado sus obras En ningún lugar del mundo, Bayamesa, Ubú pandemia, Mejor me callo y Disonancia. Sus textos se han representado y publicado en más de veinte países y se han traducido a una decena de lenguas. Ha obtenido, entre otros, el Premio Internacional Casa de las Américas (Bayamesa), el Premio Nacional de Dramaturgia Virgilio Piñera (Epopeya), el Premio de la Unión de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (Mecánica), el Premio de la Embajada de España en Cuba (Chamaco) y el Premio Cubano-Alemán de Piezas Teatrales del Instituto Goethe (Talco), en tres ocasiones el Premio de la Crítica Literaria y en cinco el Villanueva de la Crítica Teatral en Cuba. En 2012 recibió el Premio Cultura Viva, en Madrid, por el conjunto de su creación literaria. Su más reciente trabajo como guionista cinematográfico es La partida. Actualmente reside en Madrid, donde es profesor de la Universidad Carlos III. Desde 2022 es miembro del departamento artístico del Teatro de La Abadía de Madrid y coordinador artístico del Corral de Comedias de Alcalá de Henares, un emblemático teatro del Siglo de Oro Español, inaugurado en 1602.

SOBRE LA COMPAÑÍA

Fundada en 1979, Teatro Avante es una organización cultural sin fines de lucro y exenta de impuestos cuyo objetivo esencial es la preservación de la herencia cultural hispana. El grupo ha representado a Estados Unidos en México, Costa Rica, España, Japón, Francia, Colombia, República Dominicana, Guatemala, Portugal, Perú, Brasil, Venezuela, Argentina, Puerto Rico y Eslovenia y, en EE.UU., ha actuado en Miami, Nueva York, Albuquerque, Los Ángeles, El Paso y Buffalo. Ha llevado a la escena textos de Albee, Alomá, Ariza, Assad, Cabrujas, Cocteau, Ferrer, García Lorca, Manet, Matas, Pinto, Piñera, Reguera Saumell, Santana, Triana, Valle-Inclán, Williams, Orwell, Camus, Shakespeare y González Melo, entre otros. En 1994, las Olimpiadas Culturales del Comité Olímpico de Atlanta honraron a Teatro Avante con el Premio Regional de las Artes. Ese mismo año recibió el premio Ollantay en Madrid; en 1995, el Federico García Lorca en Fuente Vaqueros, España; en 2004 el Kusillo en La Paz; en 2009, el FIT de Cádiz-Atahualpa del Cioppo en Cádiz; y en 2012, el de la Universidad Científica del Sur (UCSUR) en Lima. Teatro Avante produce y presenta el galardonado Festival Internacional de Teatro Hispano de Miami. El Departamento de Asuntos Culturales del Condado de Miami-Dade nombró a Teatro Avante Gran Institución Cultural, y South Arts lo seleccionó como Tesoro Cultural del Sur, distinción que reconoce y honra la diversidad de expresión y excelencia artística de organizaciones culturales encabezadas por individuos de minorías del sur de los Estados Unidos. Recientemente, el nuevo programa National Latinx Theater Initiative reconoció a Avante como uno de sus beneficiarios.

ABOUT THE PLAY

Dissonance takes place between two eras and spaces, with the central theme being the mark that dictatorships, often rising under the guise of democratic revolutions, leave on societies and human beings. Through the tools that theater, thought and art offer, we analyze how totalitarian regimes develop mechanisms of violence, often covert and subtle, that break and test the integrity of individuals.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR 

Abel González Melo (Havana, 1980) holds a PhD in Literary Studies and an MA in Theatre and Performing Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid, and a BA in Theatre Arts from ISA, the University of the Arts, Havana. He was a participant in the 2005 Royal Court Theatre international playwrights residency in London and studied with Panorama Sur in Buenos Aires and at the Maxim Gorki Theatre in Berlin. During the 2015-16 season, he was a resident playwright at Manchester’s HOME, and since 2018, he has been Teatro Avante’s resident playwright, where he has premiered Nowhere in the World, Bayamesa, Pandemic Ubu, I’d Better Shut Up and Dissonance. His works have been published and presented in more than 20 countries and have been translated into a dozen languages. He has received the Casa de las Américas International Award (Bayamesa), the Virgilio Piñera National Playwriting Award (Epopeya), the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba’s Award (Inner Workings), the Spanish Embassy in Cuba’s Award (Chamaco, and the Goethe Institute Cuba-Germany Play Award (Talc), among others. He has on three occasions won the Cuban Literary Critics Award and is the five-time recipient of the Villanueva Theatre Critics Award. In 2012, he received the Cultura Viva Award in Madrid for his body of literary works. His most recent work as a film scriptwriter is La partida. He now resides in Madrid, where he teaches at Carlos III University. Since 2022, he has been an artistic associate at the Teatro de La Abadía in Madrid, incorporating his role as artistic coordinator of the Alcalá de Henares Corral de Comedias, an iconic Spanish Golden Age theater that opened in 1602.

Recently, the new program National Latinx Theater Initiative awarded Avante support for two years.
